Education at "The Garden"
David Rogers' Big Bugs Exhibition
began its trek back and forth across the
U.S.
in the 1990’s. A less than fifty year old sculptor with roots on Long Island,
New York, David
uses fallen woods, including willow and walnut, to create his insects. At
each exhibition site, David arrives with his driver
and semi to assemble the exhibition.
Their stay in
Owensboro: August,
September, October 2008.
Their mission: An artistic
phenomenon and
opportunity for environmental education.
This is David Rogers’ Big Bugs first visit to Kentucky! It is a
sizeable
investment intended to boost the mission of its sponsor The
Western
Kentucky
Botanical Garden and bolster community spirit in
Owensboro-Daviess
County
and surrounding area.
There are ten insects. Their size is such that
an individual could be
sitting in a second floor office and gazing into the face of a preying
mantis. Parading across The Garden will be three giant ants. Near
The Garden’s pond: a damselfly and a dragonfly. Suspended at the
picturesque gazebo: a spider and web. All will be present and
accompanied by superb educational opportunity (including signage, literature and
the teaching of Core Curriculum for school children).
And….Entertainment!
Mingled through all this will be a steady stream
of thirteen “Wondrous
Sundays”
each featuring a special show
plus an added Labor Day Weekend
Event (Saturday, August 30) featuring
the
WannaBeatles from
Nashville.
The Garden is on the western edge of Owensboro at 25 Carter Road.
Go west on Second Street
